DOMAINES BARONS DE ROTHSCHILD (LAFITE)

Los Vascos

CARMENÈRE GRANDE RÉSERVE 2013

Background

Los Vascos wines blend Lafite tradition with the unique terroir of Chile to create elegant wines that bring exceptional to the everyday. The vision of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) to expand their estate took them to South America in 1988, becoming the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. Since then, a comprehensive modernization and investment program has been undertaken, oriented towards the production of fine wine using and adapting the viticultural experiences of Bordeaux and other areas where Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) is present.
Los Vascos is located in Valley de Caneten (Colchagua), a closed valley in the central zone of Chile, approximately 25 miles from the sea. The valley provides a perfect microclimate for high quality viticulture, with Northern exposure to lands uncontaminated by airborne or water-borne pollutants. Daily on-shore winds provide temperature changes between 68-77°F, for optimum maturation of the grapes.

Appellation

Colchagua Valley, Chile

Varietal Composition

100% Carmenère

Vintage Notes

The growing season was characterized by favorable weather conditions from bud break to harvest. The absence of frost and rain enable us to harvest in perfect condition. Temperate days and cool nights also enhanced the quality of the fruit.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand-harvested May 2nd - 10th, starting with the youngest vineyards. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures which, with pumping over, allowed for the extraction of aromatic components, colors and flavor components of the carmenère.
The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (20% new, 30% second use and 50% in vats)

Tasting Notes

Deep, intense ruby red color. Expressive nose with red fruit combined with hints of candied fruit, black pepper, ripe green pepper, artichoke hearts, and eggplant antipasto, which enhance the unparalleled character and typicity of this Carmenère. The palate features notes of bitter chocolate, cherry liqueur, and fresh blueberries that accompany the elegant tannins, adding complexity to the mouthfeel, and turning this wine into a truly enlightening experience. Well-balanced acidity, alcohol, and tannins.
