Domaines Barons De Rothschild (Lafite)

Los Vascos

ROSÉ 2016

Background

Los Vascos wines blend Lafite tradition with the unique terroir of Chile to create elegant wines that bring exceptional to the everyday. The vision of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) to expand their estate took them to South America in 1988, becoming the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. Since then, a comprehensive modernization and investment program has been undertaken, oriented towards the production of fine wine using and adapting the viticultural experiences of Bordeaux and other areas where Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) is present. Los Vascos is located in Valley de Caneten (Colchagua), a closed valley in the central zone of Chile, approximately 25 miles from the sea. The valley provides a perfect microclimate for high quality viticulture, with Northern exposure to lands uncontaminated by airborne or water-borne pollutants. Daily on-shore winds provide temperature changes between 68-77°F, for optimum maturation of the grapes.

Appellation

Colchagua Valley, Chile

Varietal Composition

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah

Vintage Notes

A normal winter, with continued rains, yet mostly concentrated in July. Temperatures went up and down in the spring, with highest above 95°F. They remained high throughout the summer, particularly in January, with a peak of 100°F. In March, a month before the harvest, temperatures declined significantly -high 82°F- and many days were cloudy, which considerably reduced the ripening pace and brought grapes to optimal ripeness, with enhanced natural freshness and elegant grassy notes. Despite the unexpected precipitation during the harvest, the rain did not harm the grapes, as they were picked before the rains.

Winemaking

The harvest took place March 22nd-26th. The fruit is sorted before being chilled and then macerated for a few hours, it is then pressed to obtain the juice, which is fermented at low temperatures to keep all of its potential intact. Alcoholic fermentation takes place 3 to 4 weeks in stainless steel vats under controlled temperatures between 54° and 57°F.

Tasting Notes

Bright pale pink color with fuchsia sparks. Fruit aromas of raspberry, red cherry, gooseberry and grapefruit with delicate hints of flowers. Remarkably tasty, fresh mouthfeel and delicious texture. Drink now to enjoy its youth at best. Excellent choice as an aperitif or to pair with moderately spicy preparations like gazpacho, pizza, paella or a refreshing Greek salad. Serve chilled, between 52° and 55° F.
